GAADI FILM AND THING OF OTHERNESS
In Prasanna Withanage’s film Gaadi, everyday objects help show how the Rodee community is treated as different . Simple things like clothes, farming tools, and types of food are used to show the difference between the powerful and the powerless. These objects don’t just represent the differences; they help create and show the unfair treatment and separation between the two groups.
This film mainly focus the two groups the powerful and powerless. so the otherness works between this groups in this family.
I choose this 2 example,
1) The Wita Kela mark
2) The Begging Bowl
In the movie, Vijaya uses the wita kela to recognize Tikiri as his wife, marking her as a member of the Rodee group. This small item, placed in her mouth, represents Tikiri as one of the Rodee people, identifying her within their community. By accepting this role, she will always be seen as part of the “other” group and viewed as different from the upper caste.this is a main point in this film becoming tikiri is born with powerful and her first husband adhikaram said he is very lucky to had her. but at last had to be a rodee. and she became a rodee with a wita kela it like a situation with disgusting.
The Marking of Tikiri
In a key scene, Vijaya brands Tikiri with the wita kela to declare her as his wife. This act shows how Vijaya uses this tool to distinguish members of the Rodee community. Tikiri embraces this branding, linking her to a lower caste status. This reflects her place in society and how others see her as “other.”
THE BEGGING BOWL
The begging bowl is the tool the Rodee people rely on for their survival. They must beg for food daily, and this bowl signifies their poverty, dependence, and rejection by society.
Throughout the movie, the Rodee people use the begging bowl to gather food. The bowl serves to dehumanize them in the eyes of others. It illustrates their low status in society as they are viewed as “the other.” Still, it remains their means of survival in a harsh world.
“ if you want food , you should beg and beg “
this shows otherness best way, because the powerful people can earn and eat foods as they like but rodee can eat food also powerful people likes, if powerful people give them rice they should eat them if they give barly they should eat it. they don’t have a choice as they like. powerful people control them all the time. the otherness shows the things in this situation best way
CONNECTED WITH OTHERNESS
The wita kela and the begging bowl both highlight the unique and inferior status of the Rodee people. The wita kela marks Tikiri’s change and connects her to the outcasts. The act of begging, signified by the begging bowl, shows how Rodee members rely on this practice to live and emphasizes their subordinate position in society. It clearly indicates that they are “other.”
Reclaiming Identity: Challenging Otherness
At the end of the movie, Tikiri renounces the status of being a ‘wita kela’ and the breast cover as an act of defiance against the caste system. By rejecting the symbols that mark her as ‘other,’ she restores her dignity and refuses to let society define her.
The film of gaadi shows otherness the best way.
